Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
  • - There's way too little detail here. Need a lot more work establishing the characters and the circumstances.
  • - Good start but we need more detail. Give the reader more of a sense of who the characters are (especially their attitude) and what's going on, the circumstances we find them in.

  • - These are mostly just a few facts about the character. Be bolder, make some guesses, have an opinion.
  • - There's always some guesswork and interpretation when it comes to understanding characters. Push your thoughts a bit further and try to see the character as a real person.
  • - This seems like an overly simplistic view of the character. Think of these characters as real people who all see the world in slightly different ways.
  • - Some nice bits of opinion and interpretation here. Keep thinking it through and try to see the world through the character's eyes. What are they thinking? Why are they reacting the way they are?

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone).
  • - Make sure you use the dictionary. A lot of the words are unfamiliar or are being used in unfamiliar ways.
  • - Decoding these passages takes work; it's not supposed to be super-easy. Break it down into chunks and do your best to understand each chunk, even if the whole is still a mystery.
  • - Continue to lean on the dictionary to help you out with the complex or unusual words.
  • - Attack the longer passages one piece at a time. It's too overwhelming to try to understand these all at once.
  • - Hey, great start here! Try breaking down the longer pieces into smaller chunks so you don't get overwhelmed. Keep working it one word or one short phrase at a time.

Rubrics FAQ:
- How are EssayTagger rubrics different from traditional rubrics?
The EssayTagger system allows you to configure each rubric element to target a specific "scope" within each essay:
  • sentence-level
  • paragraph-level
  • whole document
Let's say you configure an "Evidence" element to be sentence-level. The EssayTagger grading app will then allow you to "tag" and evaluate individual sentences with the "Evidence" element. A particular essay might have one good piece of evidence and two poor ones — now you can identify exactly which ones were good and which ones weren't. You can also provide targeted feedback in each specific case.

This is a huge improvement over the typical "some evidence was insufficient and/or irrelevant" descriptor in a traditional rubric.

That's why you'll see much more specific language in the sentence-level and paragraph-level feedback comments; instead of "some body paragraphs are..." you'll see "this body paragraph is..."

That being said, whole document rubric elements are also supported. Plenty of typical rubric elements (e.g. "Organization" or "Voice") are overall categories by nature and don't require the drill-down granularity of the sentence- or paragraph-level.

We expect a typical EssayTagger rubric to make use of all three scope levels.

- Can anyone view / use this rubric?

You're free to print it out or copy-and-paste and alter the rubric for your own use however you like. We're trying to build an open community of shared rubrics for all teachers to take advantage of.

However, do note that these rubrics are designed to work at a deeper level of specificity than is normally possible/practical with traditional rubrics (see above FAQ item). It's very difficult to use a paper-based rubric to evaluate essays at a sentence- or paragraph-level of specificity.

We're big believers in this deeper level of specificity and, obviously, we think EssayTagger's system is the most efficient way to drill down deep into the students' work and give them the very specific guidance and feedback they need in order to improve.

- Can these rubrics be altered?
